Japanese Honeysuckle
 

I want to plant Japanese honeysuckle as a foodsource for deer. Anyone have any experiece with it? Understand that you can accelerate growth with supplemnetal (hot) fertilizers?

around my area all you need it water.I transplanted some to hide my pump shead That I built.I left the spicket drippin a drop or two every min.it got a little fertizler from the lawn when I put it to the grass and over the period of one summer it covered the trellis I made.8' high 16' long,it went to the top and was hanging to within 2' of the ground.

just make sure you don' t get it to hot or it will burn it.

This place markets a trelis - honeysuckle setup. Looks easy enough to build with the watering/fertilizing tube. Several years ago I asked them and they said they did use Japanese honeysuckle.

I got mine wild from the woods.once it blooms you have all the seed pods you need.it is comming up in all the flower beds around my place.

Try www.wildlifegroup.com they sell the japanese honeysuckle for $12.00 for a flat with 18 plants. They also give you instructions on how to plant them, I use a piece of chicken wire bent over a cable between two poles. Then stake the chicken wire to the ground to make an A frame plant your j.h.s. under the A frame so the main plant is protected. Depending on where you are you should probally plant in the spring and wait to fertilize when it starts to get warm and into the growing season. Be careful not to fertilize them to much before they are established because it can kill the plants. Hope this helps and good luck!

P.S. Plant them in bow range of your stand for best results.

Welcome to the board.......Can' t tell where you are from, but if honeysuckle will grow in your area you should be able to go out in the woods and look in the bottoms and find patches of it that you can get a few vines. Carry a little 13-13-13 with you and sprinkle the patch and it will help the wild stuff. Often around old house places you will find it growing also.
