Tractor guys??

I know this is probably better suited in the Wildlife Management forum....and if it needs to be moved, so be it.

But I'm going to buy a tractor next year. My in laws are getting older...and I'll need something bigger to take care of their lawn, our lawn and some food plots. I looked a t a 23hp, 3 cyl, diesel Kubota this morning. It looks to be the perfect size.

What are you guys using?

For the price you pay for a Kubota, they are great machines. I'd say you'll be happy with it.

I have access to my dad's JD and grandfather's 2 JDsand newholland. All are realy nice tractors, but i just love the JDs. My dad's JD gets used and abused but it has never let him down, and i am the one who has used and abused my grandfather's tractors. All three are workhorses and we have only had my grandfather's JD bust a hydraulic hose twice- thats the only operational damage inflicted to any of them.

Yeah, and nothing drains your bank account like a Deere either.:D Don't get me wrong... I grew up on a farm driving John Deere tractors. They're tops, but they're so stinkin' expensive.

Jeff,
Kubotas are really good tractors at a reasonable price, but I believe that if I were you, I'd look for something with a little more than 23 hp for food plots in the woods. I'm sure it'd work for basic soil prep and working, but if you have to clear anything, you might want a little more muscle.

We have a 1998 29hp 4wd Kubota. Before this we had a 39 horse 4wd Zetor but decided to down size because the 29 horse is much more nimble in the woods and has all the power we really need for anything.

#1 thing I can say is don't buy one unless it's 4wd. I can't stress this enough. On top of that get a bucket loader.

Also, if you have someone local that you can trust to work on it and doesn't mind that you bought it elsewhere, ebay is your friend. I typically don't disclose this sort of stuff, but to give you an idea, our Kubota was bought about 2 years ago for roughly $5000 with about 900 hours on it and it's a 1998 model (smoking deal). It also came with a large wood trailor, and a hopper spreader designed to spread fertilizer/seed. It was owned by a golf course and was literally covered in golf ball dents, we bought it and brought to a local auto body shop to fix the body and repaint. When it was all said and done we had roughly $9,000 into it after the body work, all new paint and decals, and a brand new bucket loader installed on it, and we managed to sell the wood trailor for $1k, and the seeder/spreader for $2k. We did pretty good. [8D]

Must have implements for plots are as listed:

A good brush hog mower deck for clearing new plots
For lawns and/or clover mowinga finish mower deck
Agood wood trailor
Disc
Rake
Drop spreader (for fertilizer/lime)
I'd love to have a cultipacker but haven't used one as of yet. For now I've fabricated a drag out of an old section of chain link fence that seems to cover things nicely.

Here are some pics for you........

I live on a small tract of land a little over 8 acres, and own the 29hp 4X4 with a front end loader, and let me tell you that thing is an absolute delight, I have never done anything to the tractor other than regular maintenance and you talk about handy to have around. My family has a hunting ranch in the eastern part of the state and I use it there too, we don't do spring time food plots, so in the early fall when we plant all our plots the fields are over grown and that little dude just keeps cutting. I purchased mine in mid 2000, and I would recommend Kubota to anyone, it's a great little tractor and stout for a little guy.
