Winter Cover/Food Plot for Upstate NY - Pheasants
 

Anyone willing to share their successes with planting for the heavy snow and wind in the Syracuse area? Will be raising a few hundred pheasants and getting my licenses for the NYS preserves to release and hunt on with the dogs.

Primarily for training purposes -have hundreds of acres of corn around - so i think just cover is number one priority.. Something they can get it and hide through the heavy snows and tough winds.

any input appreciated

Can I buy some of your pheasants to release on my property? im serious.. you got turkeys too? quail?
i want to release a bunch of birds on the land. let me know.. thanks for input.

tough to beat standing corn for winter cover. It stands tall, and acts like a snow fence too. Turkeys & Pheasants can easily get to the ears even with several feet of snow.




Sunflowers look promising in the fall, but are MIGHTY THIN when the leaves fall off, and the snow falls.

Crops like Wheat left standing, or Rye is only decent until the snow comes, and then it wont stand up to even a mild winter like this one. Sorghum might be a good option, but I have not tried it.

I have lots of experience with Turkeys on our property - and not so much with pheasants. I do see lots of Pheasant sign over at Green Lakes - in the overgrown areas with lots of Wild Rose - Its seems to offer real good cover, though I wouldn't want it overgrown on my property.

sorgum and milo are probably the two most on top of my list.

sorgum does withstand it fairly well - although it doesn't grow great in tight rows from what i've seen

will have to try it this coming year and see how it works
