apple trees
hey im not too sure how long it takes for an apple tree to start producing apples.
dont move this mods because im thinking about planting some around my stand:D if anyone knows please let me know via here or PM thanks |
RE: apple trees
Depends on how big the trees are when you plant them. A good pair of 8' trees should start producing in a couple of years. That's my experience anyway.
Good luck! |

RE: apple trees
thank you
do you know what the price range generally is for an 8 footer? |
RE: apple trees
Depends on where you buy and where you live. Check around several different stores to find what you want at the best price.

RE: apple trees
It'll depend on how old they are when you plant them. If you are thinking of doing it this year, get a soil analysis done right away. You may have to fertilize/lime the area which needs to be done pretty much now. Soils analysis takes about two weeks. We just finishedliming and prunningmy apples this past weekend. Also make sure the trees get plenty of sun.
BTW, deer love to browse shoots, so keep them protected. |
RE: apple trees
In good soil an apple tree takes seven years to produce apples. You will need a male tree and a female tree and bees around to pollanate. I use an organic insectaside on mine to keep bugs and worms away. Good luck

RE: apple trees
woo thats a long time
but we do expect to have this lease for that long! thanks for the help everyone!! |
RE: apple trees
An 8' tree will already be several years old. I know at our last place, we planted two peach, two apple, and two pear, all 6 - 8' tall. The next year they all produced, not a lot, but produced. The following year double the previous year. The third year, we had more fruit than we knew what to do with.

RE: apple trees
Man Im in the same boat. I have researched this so much I should gave a degree in it:) First off, there are a million different types of apple trees. Some bear fruit after only 2 or 3 years some up to 10. You also have different types of root stock that determine how tall they will grow such as dwarf, semi-dwarf, and standard. Dwarf and semi-dwarf will bear earlier but they will only grow to 10-15 feet. A standard takes longer to bear fruit and will reach 20-25 feet but is slower growing. Also some types bear every year while some are every other. If you want have time to spray them for diseases there are a few that you can buy that have been "bred" that are disease resistant. Apples trees are not self pollinating so you will need at least 2 unless you get one that has been grafted with about 4 or 5 other types of apples. They are usually self pollinating. The winter banana apple tree is an excellent pollinizer. When do you want your apples to ripe? Depending on the type of apple tree some are ripe in june while others not until december. There is alot more to this than I thought and have been doing a lot of reading on it. Also you need to see what zone you are and see if that type can even grow in you area. Heres what I plan a planting, 2 of each. Liberty apple trees on semi dwarf root stock. They bear early and have heavy crops and are disease resistant. The also ripen at the start of bow season. Winter banana for pollinizer. Black Arkansas cause it dont ripen until december. Jonafree, about the same as liberty. Im also going to plant a few meader persimmon trees. Do you a little research and see what best fits your needs. Also, February and March are usually the best months to start planting. Might be later for you cause I dont know where your from. You dont want the ground froze but you dont want it to warm either cause the tree must still be in dormacy. Hope this helps.
