Tropical Corn

Have any of you tried planting tropical corn? We are thinking about trying about 6 or 8 acres this year. A coule of people have said that it will last longer in the field and is more tolerant to dry weather.

I'm not familiar with it - is it more expensive than standard field corn?

I've always been impressed with corn's ability to handle drought like situations (3-4 weeks - no rain)- especially on soils heavy with clay. I'd imagine that the looser the soil (loam, sand) the worse standard corn could handle drought times.

Is tropical corn more suited for sandy soils?

Thanks - If I lived in the south, had sandy soil or prolonged drought, I'd consider it. Some searching indicated it cost $30-35 more per bag than standard hybrids, but if it could withstand drought well - it would be worth the money.
