RE: PLANTING OPINIONS FOR SANDY SOILS

How sandy is your soil? Are there farms around your property that are growing crops? Take a hint from them as to growing corn, etc. You may need lime and the fertilizer requirements will usually be much higher. You have the perfect area to plant oak trees (Sawtooth) but you'll need ten years before harvest. Even though it isn't normally done for agricultural purposes the soil will grow clover and alfalfa. There may be bare patches after the summer heat but you should get some level of crop. Alfalfa plants have the ability to put roots down into the soil several yards. This helps the plant survive drought. Areas that have partial shade help the crop. Mulberries appear to adapt to sandy soil and deer love the leaves and fruit.

Sand is a great growth medium. All you have to do is keep it watered, fertilized and limed :)
