Question about oats
I am getting the food plots on my land ready for planting this year for a late season plot and was wondering when the best time to plant buck forage oats would be. I live in Northern MI and right now we are in our usually July drought, so i was thinking early august would be good but wanted some of your imput. Also, i put some round-up down 2 weeks ago and it did not kill the weeds and grass in the plots. They are about 1/2 an acre and i put down about 10 gallons, does it need more that that. Thanks for any imput.

RE: Question about oats
If its really dry there round up may not kill the grass and weeds really well. Need some moisture. Plants have to be actively growing in order to kill it. I'm waiting for a reply to your question about oats though. I'm planning on planting some too. Can you plant them too early? I'll wait and see if you get a response from someone who knows....

RE: Question about oats
BFO website suggests Aug 20th->Mid sept as best dates to plant for us in northern climes. (haven't tried it yet myself though)

RE: Question about oats
I would be sure to re-apply the Round-Up until the grasses and such have died. This could be a sign of just how bad the weeds might go once you turn it over and plant your plot. Also, as mentioned, I generally try to hit a planting date between Aug 15 and Spet 10. Best of luck to ya

RE: Question about oats
Labor Day Weekend in the north for planting Cereal Grains.
That gives you 6 weeks growth for Mid-October bow seasons. FH |
RE: Question about oats
the reason for the weeds not dieing are, 1. no moisture after application, or,2. Not strong enough to do any damage.
