If you have a large deer population a plot of less than one acre isn't much to work with. You could probably go with clover and then in the early fall plant a cereal grain plot. If you are clearing a plot with a dozier go ahead and get a couple of acres or more if possible.

The key would be... what time of the fall do you want the plot to be the most effective/attractive. With a small plot it is hard to plant a variety of foods well. You could go with good ol Ladino clover, which is great all summer and early fall with enough rain. Rye can be great mid to late fall if planted in mid/late August. Oats, winter wheat, rape can also be very effective in the Fall when done as a late summer planting.

It is hard to compete if there are alot of farm fields around. But a late summer - early fall planting of a frost hardy cereal grain, that will still be green after beans and corn are harvested, can be a great deer magnet.

You need to do some soil samples first. Also, dig some holes with a post hole digger to a depth of about two feet. Check out what type of soil you have in the hole and the depth of each. Until you do this we cannot possibly give you any meaningful advise... Don't be in a hurry to fail!!! Depending on soil make up and pH values, you may not be able to plant a perennial forage until fall planting season, August 1 - September 15. Spring planting is traditionally March 20 - May 15. You may be able to plant some type of annual/soil builder during the waiting period. This may be worked up in the fall to do the fall planting.

A good plot to do would to go and disk up the field then harrow it up. Then a plant alfalfa and clover and maybe a little corn in the corner or something like that then cut it down after a while so then it will get really strong and thick. Then for the fall and summer it will be able to make it threw the heat and the dry weather.

P.S. good luck with the food plot <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>
