Bio-Maxx test

Yesterday we decided to experiement with some Bio-Maxx just to see what would happen? We broacast planteda couple acres of the RR soybean and corn mix, lightly disced the seed in and then rolled the plot to firm the seedbed. I was very curious to see how this planting could be handled without the heavy equipment and the use of an expensive seed drill. I'm still skepticalabout the corngrowth and productionor for that matter even if the stalks can surivive the critters such as coon and squirrels. I guess it's now a waiting game to see how the planting will develop. I'll hit the plot with a Round-Up application in 3 to 4 weeks as suggested. As a fan of RR soybeans though, I'm very interested in seeing how well these 3 varieties selected by Bio-Logic do?

A close up of the RR seeds

The plots were disced then harrowed

After the disc and the drag, I broadcast the seed with the EarthWay seeder and then I rolled the plot to firm the seedbed

Now,.... let it rain! :)

Oooohh,... IF only advertising claims were accurate the plot would look like this! ;):D

Good luck with your plot IL-Cornfed. Sure is a nice looking seedbed. Post some pics as the plot progresses.

RE: Bio-Maxx test

I planted 6 bags of it today, we worked the field with a 36 ft JD disc and roller baskets about 3 times then I seeded it with a spinner spreader, then we tried rolling it with a roller harrow which didnt do a very good job , so I had the disc operator raise his disc and roll it with the baskets, tomorrow it get a roundup treatment. We sell Monsanto seed and lthis stuff is exactly what we sell, packaged much differently, If we had a spill at the seed barn and had to clean it up this is what we would come up with " floor sweepings" I would be curious to know how much this costs in those 45 lb bags with that nice picture......

RE: Bio-Maxx test

Does anyone have any pix of what their Bio-Maxx plots look like? I'd love to see how close they come to the advertising photos?

We got a ground soaking rain Tues and then a bit more Wed, so now with nothing but sunshine predicted over the next several days I should end up with a pretty decent start.

Il-Cornfed,
I hope you have better luck than we did last year.Weplanted an acre of Bio-Maxx and were very disappointed in the corn, the soy beans were ok.
This year I planted just plain Soy Beans and plan on over seeding it with turnips in August.

RE: Bio-Maxx test

The strictly RR soybean plots have traditionally been THE best plots I've ever had and that's even putting them up against comercial blends of anything. I will probably also have a RR soybean plot where I'll broadcast brassicas over in the Fall. I just really wanted to see how this commercial Bio-Logic blend would do and honestly I don't believe it will live up to the hype either? I just don't see the corn getting that impressive or even that thick for the most part. I wouldn't need the corn to develop truly impressive ears if it would judt come up dense enough to add screening cover for the deer that will step out into the plot? I'm just curious... I'll guess we'll soon see just how well it does? I'll keep ya'all posted throughout it's progress

IL-cornfed,

I planted my own blend of RR soybeans and corn on the 5/14. I broadcast the beansand lightly disced, then planted the corn with a two row planter. We also got a good soaking rain here on tuesday and the sunshine is working its magic.
Ill post some photos as the plot progresses and we can compare the commercial mix to the do-it-yourself.
This is my second year doing this and it turned out great last year. The corn didnt offer as much screening cover as a strictly corn plot but offered just enough and the ears were unbelievable.

How much did it cost per bag?

How much did it cost per bag?
The Bio-Maxx is obviously over priced, like ALL commercial blends. It ran something like $70 for a 45 lbs bag and that's a 1 acre application.

RE: Bio-Maxx test

I sell the same stuff in a 50# bag for $30.50..........

Isn't the mark up amazing for that pretty little commercial label! [&:]:(

RE: Bio-Maxx test

Hey IL, I just planted some rr soybeans and mixed in some corn in part of it for my own version of biomax.
I see you really like rr soybeans and I think your deer density is higher in fulton county as compared to me in vermilion county. My question is how big normally are your rr bean plots?? I am concerned that the deer might hammer my beans before they get mature. I am planting them for a late season hunting plot.
Also by looking at your picture of the biomaxx I think I might of broadcast to much corn in with my beans. Time will tell.
I will try to post progress pics through out the summer.

RE: Bio-Maxx test

ILL Buck,

I've tried smaller "hunting" plots of beans that were less than a 1/2 acre but the deer hit 'em so hard they just didn't have much of a chance to reach maturity. There is always the option of using Plot Saver to keep the deer out? Bigger is certainly better when talking about something they love as much as RR soybeans. If I had my choice I would prefer 3 to 5 acre plots but if I was forced to, I would settle for small 1/4 to 1/2 acre "hunting" plots. I always figure if they over browse 'em then I could just broadcast Brassicas and/or Oats in Sept over the crop?

As far as broadcasting the corn to thick, I believe the Bio-Maxx is 1/3 corn so that's pretty heavy on the corn.

I did check the plots yesterday and both the soybeans and the corn were just emerging. Should start to look like a plot by next weekend,... IF we can get some rain? PLEASE rain!

RE: Bio-Maxx test

The Biomaxx bag I have has 11% Corn and the 87% Soybean. I am testing it against my RR Forage Soybeans and a RR corn hybrid suited for my area. I will keep you updated on my test in Arkansas. The soybeans in mine are maturity 4.7, 4.9, and 5.3. Not very late for the south.

So hows the plot doing? I'm looking at hopefully planting some of this this weekend. I did spray my 1 acre plot last week with roundup ahead of time. Let me know how you make out and when you sprayed. Any information you can share with me would be great.

RE: Bio-Maxx test

I have also developed a viny type Roundup Ready Soybean that will climb up the corn. It is like the Bobwhite and Quail Haven, but has a Forage type as the parent. It looks great. I will post pictures this year as the season goes along.

The BioMaxx is coming up. However, it's been in the 90's and there's no sign of rain anywhere in the forcast. :(

Hey it looks good to me. Does look a little dry though. Maybe it'll rain soon. We got soaked last fall and early spring. Could use a little around here though. So did you spray it with round up? If so when how many weeks after planting??

I hit it with Round-Up Saturday, I'l try to snap a few pix this weekend when I run out to check the trail cams.

It FINALLY RAINED today! :)

This was my drought striken plot as of 2 days ago and after the Round-Up application.

RE: Bio-Maxx test

Looks good hopefully mine will look as good. I finally got it planted on saturday. They were calling for showers saturday afternoon and sunday afternoon... Of course we didn't get any. So the seeds just sitting there in the ground with hardly any water. Hopefully it will be okay until tomorrow. There calling for showers and possibly 1/2 inch of rain. would be good if its not all at once but spread out through the day. But at this point I'll take it anyway I can get it. I also planted some alfa feast. About an acre of alfa feast and an acre of biomaxx. I mostly wanted the bio-maxx as a barrier to help isolate the plot a little more than it already is. How long was it before you started seeing green stuff poke up through?
