Big plot project!
Well I just thought I would share the project I started this past fall. This is my biggest plot to date, I have planted smaller ones to see what grows good and what the deer like!
Here is the 1st stage, cutting/discing the quack grass! ![]() |
RE: Big plot project!
Then the plowing.
![]() This was done last fall, we let it sit all fall and thru the winter. I turned it and hit it with a disc this spring! |
RE: Big plot project!
This is 2 weeks ago. I decided to make the plot even bigger. Once I decided what I was going to plant, there wasn't enough room! The left is what I turned over last fall. The right is what I turned over 2 weeks ago. I will let this side sit and rot thru the summer and plant Rye in the fall. The Rye seems to really kill off the weeds and quack grasses very well!

Another view from the opposite end looking back!

RE: Big plot project!
I'll be planting RR Soybeans, Corn in this plot and pumpkin. I have other smaller plot with Clover and Biologic Premium Perennial and Rye. I'll be going up to the cabin Memorial weekend and put the seed in the ground! I'm looking forward to the results!

RE: Big plot project!
Here is another pic. I have in the Tube a Sawtooth Oak(Gobbler Strain), the little orange marker flags are Hazel Nut bushes and to the left of the picture, not marked are 3 Crabapple Thicket bushes! The row is planted with White pine and small Olive Bushes! This plot should be good and secluded in a few years with plenty of food available for the Wildlife!

RE: Big plot project!
Very impressive. Great job. Keep posting the progress if you can.
|
RE: Big plot project!
Good luck with the plot. I enjoy the development pix and look forward to seeing what it looks like once it's planted. What are the actual dimensions of the plot in yards?
|
RE: Big plot project!
Thanks guys, I call this a big plot because its the biggest to date for me! I really enjoy working the land and planting all the trees!
IL-Cornfed, I forgot to get the actual size of the "big" plot. I will get the dimensions once I go back up in 2 weeks! I would have to say once its all planted by fall it will be close to 3/4 of an acre or so I'm itching to get this planted, but I need to be patient because of the late frost we get up there! I'm hoping to try out some RR Soybeans from eagle seed co! We'll see! Otherwise I have a farmer I can get some from up north! Joe b! |
RE: Big plot project!
Alright, I just got my RR Soybeans that Brad from eagleseed.com was kind enough to let me try out!!! I'll be headed up to the cabin Thursday morning and putting all my seed in the ground! I can't wait to get back up there! Things should be all greened up! I'll be sure to take more pics as well!

RE: Big plot project! Updated 5/28...
Well I finally got to put my seed in the ground! Alot of work but should be good. We got rain 2 hours after I got the Soybeans in the ground! Hopefully well get more soon! The left side is the only part with seed, the right side is waiting for Rye in the fall! I broadcast the beans then lightly disced it in! I'm pretty happy with the results!

RE: Big plot project! Updated 5/28...
This plot is at the south end of my big plot. If you look at the above picture you can see the brush pile and this plot is on the other side of the pile in a swell! I planted Rivers Run in this. I tried a small patch last fall and got excellent results! Rivers Run has clovers, chicory, sugar beets and Rape. This spot had rye in for the past 2 years so the weed are hopefully under control!

RE: Big plot project! Updated 5/28...
This area has been worked up for about 10 years, we always planted in here. I just really started getting serious with the plot last spring. If you look at 2 pictures up this is located where the pines and hardwoods meet! The left is Biologic Premium Perennial that really took off this spring. The middle is Rye that I'll let go to seed then disc it in so it comes back this fall! The right is Tecamote Pea Patch with some Corn mixed in around the edges as well as Pumpkins!

RE: Big plot project! Updated 5/28...
Another look at the Biologic. You can also see where I worked the edges with the tiller and put in Pumpkins, Radish, Gords and Watermellons!

A closer look at the Biologic Premium Perennial!

...an even closer look at the Biologic! I'm VERY happy with the results! I'm just looking forward to the first frost!

ORIGINAL: IL-Cornfed Good luck with the plot. I enjoy the development pix and look forward to seeing what it looks like once it's planted. What are the actual dimensions of the plot in yards? |
RE: Big plot project!
27 yards x 3 = 81'
95 yards x 3 = 285' 81' x 285' = 23,085 sq. ft. 43,580 sq. ft. in an acre a little over 1/2 ac in your plot looks nice. |
RE: Big plot project!
Hey Patch, thanks for the info! That helps me big time!
|
RE: Big plot project!
43,560 sg. ft. in an acre I missed it by 20 sq. ft. Happens !!!
Yes knowing the acreage helps a lot since thats the way you have to figure weed control, lime, fertilizer and seed. I use to guess at acreage and then started measuring......like guessing yardage...it doesn't hurt to measure it off once in awhile. Have fun with the plot and of course you plan to install a few stands around...yes!!! |
RE: Big plot project!
Well I have go news and bad news!
The good news.....is that my we got about 2.5 inches of Rain this past weekend, a real good 2 day soaker! Everything started to pop out of the ground! All the hard worked was paying off!!! The bad news.... is that the temps went down to 30 degrees last night and the ground was white with frost... ![]() I assuming that I'll loose my Soybeans, some Pumpkins and watermellons?? I'm hoping the corn, chicory and brassicas make it! I'll know in a couple of days or so! I'm saying my prayers! Joe b! |
RE: Big plot project!
If it is wet, as long as the temps weren't at 30 for a long time, I wouldn't think you would have a lot of damage. Especially with it being wet. If they were wet when it froze, they should have had a layer of ice form around them. Once the ice is formed, the temp of the ice will hold at 32, and keep the colder outside air from reaching the plant. A lot of plants can live through32 for a while.
However, they can't live through 28 or lower for very long. Low spots are real bad about that. If there isn't any wind, the coldest air will settle in them, making them 5-10 degrees cooler than the surroundings.[:o] |
RE: Big plot project!
Thanks NT, I got word that it was a hard frost for about 6 hours! Which SUCKS for me. Anyway the RR Soybeans were 2-4 inches in height. Most all the plants had at least 4 leaves on them and they came in real good and thick! I'll find out on Saturday when my Uncle goes over to check on them and see how they look! I more concerned about these more than anything! The Chicory really wasn't popping up yet, so I'm thinking that'll make it!
Like I said I'll find out by Saturday. Thanks again NT! Joe b! |
RE: Big plot project!
Well it looks good for the soybeans, they are all looking great, the frost didn't hurt them at all! I did loose some pumpkins, sunflowers and corn. They got burned pretty bad. Good thing I planted them heavy!
I'll be going up in the next few weeks and I can't wait to see how it all looks and take a million more pictures! My uncle said all the plots are coming in real good, we just need more rain! |
