ageing deer teeth,any biologists?
I determined the seven point I shot this year is a 1.5 year old deer. The only thing I dont understand is by this time the third premolar should be worn down.It still has three cusps that are fairly sharp. Is this a 1.5 year old deer?By 2.5 it should have two cusps on the third premolar. So I know its not 2.5 years old.Am I correct on this?

I'm far from a biologist, but yes if the third pre-molar still has 3 cusps it is definfitely 1.5
At somepoint around 1.5 they will lose that tooth and replace it with the 2 cusp tooth. I think it just varies deer to deer as far as when this actually happens. Most of what I've read says it happens around 18-20 months. The wear on the teeth can vary also based on the area you are in, and the diet the deer has. Some show alot more wear, some much less....even though they may be the same age.

Real nice jaw bone aging charts are available from the Quality Deer Management Association if you are interested.
