Just found the sight and thought I would add my knowledge of soybean. I am licensed with Monsanto to breed Roundup Ready Soybeans. With the popularity of late maturing soybean for food plots, I developed a Roundup Ready Forage Soybean that is a maturity group 7. Compared to standard RR soybean, it produces almost twice as much biomass as current varieties huge leaves and the ability to stay green longer. It is not practical for farmers to plant a late maturing soybean in their area, because harvest can be muddy late in the year, therefore earlier is better. In a food plot, you want the soybeans to stay green longer and more attractive to the deer especially in early bow season. These 2 cultivars I developed can reach 5-6 feet tall and create cover as well as forage. I will be glad to help with any other soybean questions. Be sure to innoculate soybeans if there is not a history of soybean in a plot.

Large I sell for Monsanto in Delaware Dekalb and Asgrow, never heard of a group 7 , we tried some Group 2's as an expermint and had very good results with them. We move several thousand units of seed a year,we were at one time the largest dealer of soybeans E of the Miss. dont know if that still stands or not.... that was when we were just Dekalb..we surely have something in common on this site....

Ron, Soybeans range in maturity from 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. The 000, 00,0are grown in Canada, 1-3 in the Midwest,4-6 in the southand the 7 through 10 in the extreme south. This is only a guide. Farmers choose to plant earlier or later maturing varieties for different reasons. If you plant a southern variety such as a 7, in the north, it will stay green and mature much later usually with the help of frost. This is not practical for seed production, because the killing of the plant by frost may notallow the seed to mature fully. The plus side in a food plot isthe soybeans stay green and attractive to deer much later in the season and produce a lot more plant matter for forage. If we plant a MG 2 in the south, it will mature a lot earlier, bevery short, and will not reach maximum yield compared to a variety such as a 4 or 5 that is more suited to my home state of Arkansas. Soybeans are photoperiodic and respond differently to the length of day.

RonM (and others)- I'm in Maryland and plant corn, soybeans, winter wheat and sunflowers. I'm looking to try the Clearfield sunflowers this year. Question: why is there so little information on the Web on where to buy seed and/or ag chemicals? Searches produce almost nothing if one is interested in determining the cost of seed or Beyond herbicide for example. Don't know whether or not I pay too much when I call a local dealer. There is a ton of information about almost anything else I look to buy but not seeds and chemicals??? Just wondering.

I moved some Clearfields yesterday and found out they can be treated with a herbicide , not Roundup, wasnt up on that until yesterday.. Also Large I talked to the boss today and he tells me about group 8's and 9's in the south.... We grow mid 4's and some late 3's after wheat and some late 4's as well some of the buyers are liking 2802's , We tried some 24-51 and cut them around labor day and they went over 100 b/a is places... We also do several varieties of corn and beans in test plots for field day....

The herbicide for Clearfield sunflowers is "Beyond" from BASF. The quote I'm getting is $550/gal. Can't believe the stuff can't be purchased in lesser quantities for plot growers like myself. :(
