Minearals: What do you use...
Hey guys I was just wondering what minerals you all use and if you have them out all year.
I have been putting out the Rock, not sure of the brand name, but it looks like a rock. It took the deer a while to find it but when they did they used it regularly, I had this out year around. I tried Deer Cocaine, I found it was a waste of money! I think I had 1 deer and 1 elk hit it! This year I tried some new stuff because Jay's didn't have the Rock in yet. So I put out Champs Buck Magnet Minerals, this stuff seems to work very well. I had 8 different deer, at different times come into this stuff within 2 hours of having it in the ground! I was in shock! I watched them just paw the ground and eat it up! I'll keep an eye on the site and see if they keep using it! I hope so! So what type do you all use?? |
RE: Minearals: What do you use...
I start with calcium, phosphorus and potassium. Once I build those levels up I look at sulfer. Next I boost the levels of magnesium, boron, zinc, and manganese. Once these minerals have been brought up to recomended levels with a soil Ph of 6.5 to 6.8 .... I plant clovers and brassicas.
The clovers and brassicas uptake the minerals, the deer eat the clovers and brassicas and get more minerals than they require. |

I get all my stuff at the local AG supply store. I put out one trace mineral block, the rusty red looking kind. Then I also put out a block made for most livestock, can't remember the name but on the side of the block it has a pic of a cows head, horse and goat. It has alot of the same stuff in it most of the deer mixes has in it, alot of calcium, phosphorus, and others that deer need for racks and growth. They are both fifty pound blocks and only cost about seven bucks. I keep them out all year, but they only use them in the early spring and summer, come fall they stop. I also usually put new ones out in late Feb and sometimes in late summer or fall just to make sure they are kept available for them.
