How could I improve my land for deer?
Bought me a piece of land (17 1/2 acres) up on top of a hill here in Ky. Only real flat place on it is up by road were I will be building a house in a few years. Its pretty much down the side of the hill into a creek bottom then back up the other side of a hill were it levels off a bit. All big hardwoods, not very thick anywhere. I could probably put a few small food plots in but I'm worried about them not getting enough sun with these huge trees. Got a feeder out and a few mineral blocks and was thinking about some honeysuckle. Any suggestions that could help me out.

How large is the creek bottom? Thin some trees. Watch the salt intake on the minerals.

Ditto what lunchbucket said. Cut out some of the bigger trees. If you allow the sunlight to hit the floor you'll be amazed at what will happen. Doing that would probably be better than any small plots you could put in.

The creeks not that big. Its just were the water runs off the hill and it runs through my property. There is only water in it if there has been a good rain or snow. Thanks for the help.

How long and how wide?

Cutting some of the big trees will allow the forest floor to replenish itself and it will thicken up. Leave the big trees, that will create a safety area or even a bedding area.

Well, I'd say 5 to 10 feet wide in places. At one point there are like 20 foot cliffs around it that you have to go around to get across. Wouldn't want to take that plunge. My land is 415 yrds wide and it runs all the way through. So what are ya getting at?

Using eight feet as a medium and your property is over 400 uds long, you have almost a 1/4 acre of prime bottom land to plant... Should get 1-3 tons annually with a good forage.

I'm new to all this. Can you explain some things I could do? Thanks!
