RE: when to put out mineral licks
If you had a mineral lick out now the deer would probably be utilizing it. Deer seek out minerals in the spring and summer, bucks for growing antlers and does for lactating. It is recommended one mineral site per 40 acres and if you can put it near a water source that would be good too. I have had good usage from the Cutting Edge minerals put out by the Whitetail Institute. I would get one out soon if you plan on doing so. Also they are great for getting trail cam photos if you have one.

RE: when to put out mineral licks
I just aquired a new piece of property to hunt on, and I made sure that I had mineral licks out just as the cold weather was breaking. I scouted the property when there was 6" of snow on the ground and found that there were tracks all over the place inside of the woods. The property is very old growth timbers with very little undergrowth so it is very open for them to walk wherever they want. What I did was to try and locate the most traveled areas and place the licks there. Hopefully this will get them to centralize their movements.
