RE: wat plot?
Check the growing zone for Buck Forage Oats. Best green field seed I have ever planted. We had about 12 acres of them this year and the plots, although well fertilized and good rains, were kept mowed all winter. Our growth cages are pretty, but the rest of the plots are skinned.

RE: wat plot?
Who makes Buck forage oats? is it a spring or fall planting?

RE: wat plot?
Buck Forage Oats is a fall planting - planted in Late August in the Northeast.

I had good success with Brassica. My Bow season starts Oct. 15 and the deer were grazing the plot at that time. I planted 8/18, which was later than I wanted, but worked. Best of Luck!

RE: wat plot?
FH, do you think top seeding forage oats over beans in our area would work?

RE: wat plot?
I've personally found that Forage Oats are a good choice. They have explosive growth and stay green far longer than most varieties do. In fact it took temps to stay consistently in the 20's before they seemed to stop growing on my plots. I also found that the deer would dig through a fair amount of snow to reach the Oats. They are also pretty cheap to plant.

Another good choice, as mentioned above, would be a brassica planting. All the popular seed companies now offer good brassica blends and I've had good luck with several.
Here's probably what I would consider the easiest and cheapest brassica blended plot to grow. Bio-Logic Green Patch Plus is a good mix of brassicas/wheat/oats. It grows nearly anywhere and it grows quickly. ![]() Another very impressive Brassica plot that I've had good results with is the Tecomote Ultra Forage. I think this is THE best growing brassica plot I've tried to date but I didn't get the mix of seed species to come up like I was hoping for. The brassica and rape grew exceptionally well though and I had deer on this plot from the Oct 1 opener to the close of bow season. |
