Default how do you take care of brush ?

i just recently cleared some of my property of brushin northern California with a dozer and i want to keep it grass not brush. i was thinking of two things to keep the brush down. one would be to plant a food plot for the animals and maybe that would help keep it down. the other thought would be to just spray the brush with pesticides. the only bad thing about pesticides would be if it gets on my apple trees or the animals somehow eat the vegetation.

Is prescribed fire an option?

Are you serious??? I think California has had enough forest fires the past few years. I'd plant it with something and keep it mowed.

Spent a lot of time brush hogging the sumacs and wild plums around our place. It was a waste oftime and money. All that brush and tall grass makes for good game cover.

One of the following should work:

- livestock pasture every few years
- as North Texan suggested - controlled burn every few years
- mowing
- tree plantings
- herbicides
- constant cultivation (ie. food crops)
- aggressive vegetation (buffalograss, etc)

Personally, if you don't need the area for crops it's good to have an area of brush for wildlife.
