What grows in extreme shade?

I have and area that is heavily wooded.
I'd like to have a food plot that grows underneath this
canopy of Tall pines, birch, and scattered Osage Orange.
I was thinking i wanted to plant:
[ol][*]Chikory[*]alfalfa[*]turnips with large foliage[*]Brassica[*]possibly cabbage[/ol]
will any of these survive the shade?
Ph levels are good and area is very moist>

Most garden plants can take some shade , but not continuously or all day long . None of the plants you listed would do well in constant shade , have you considered opening the canopy a bit with some selective felling ? How about just fertilizing what's already growing there if the deer are eating it ?

The only thing would be creeping red fescue grass , and they might favor a little grass if nothing else is available, but dont count on it too heavily.....

Some of my plots are trails or logging roads on my property. They will get some sun but not alot. Try planting anything you want, you might be surprised on what will grow. It might not grow to its full size but your not harvesting it anyways. I always get turnips and clovers, This past fall I put in some winter wheat and with the leaves coming down it opened it up enough that I had a good growth of wheat for the fall and winter.I do have one small area that no sun get to at alland I plan on doing some trimming of branches so that I can get something to grow so the trail does not erode away. What I'm getting at is you don't know what will grow if you don't try. My turnips may not get 4" in dia. but a 2" turnip is better than nothing and it's for the deer.
