In the Midwest an corn left standing will be a favorite.

An established plot of turnips, rape, and or kale produce some great late season forage. Deer will browse the tops and unearth the tubors as well. Very economical and easy to start.

I like a combination of chicory, clover, as my perennials while going with Brassicas and winter rye as my annuals...With this combination you are pretty much protected from early frost or late frost problems....
