why food plots
 

I hunt in a area where there is corn,beans, alafla. I have stands right by this alafla field I dont ever see deer out eating in it that much. Why is this? Also I never understood why some people plant food plots. Yeah if you dont hunt where there is farm crops I can see. Where there is farm crops whats the point?

generally crops are only seasonal...that being said alot of it is also in the open and/or near roads etc or are high(like corn) that hide deer well so the deer hit them at night most of the time..go drive around in the daylight and youll be lucky to see a deer around here in the field..hit them at night with a spotlight and they are loaded..once in a while they might hit it early morning and late evening..

foodplots on the other hand can provide food all year round which attract deer. some are also more desirable to deer then crops. food plots can also be put in areas deer feel safe. the guys on TV with huge field like plots get away with it because the deer dont see much pressure and feel safe enough to enter them in daylight. if i do plots next year im going to do a few small ones hidden and secluded so the deer feel safe to hit them in the daylight...

Alfalfa is not very high on the deer preference list. Yes, there are times after cutting that the new tender growth is attractive, but there are many other plots that deer would prefer at various times of the year.
Variety, improved taste and attractiveness, once the farm crops are harvested .... your plots are all that is left standing for the deer.

Farm crops are designed for cost efficiency, harvest-ability, and storage ability ..... not for deer attractiveness, nutrition, digestability, or availability at the time of year when they need it most.

Even in farm areas Food plots offer a high protein source for deer, and since deer anters are 85% protien, this will help gain wanted mass in your deer...
