Food Plot ?
Ok first of all I live in North Central MN. I am wanting to plant something now that will green up about the time everything else around here is dying off. What do I plant?

RE: Food Plot ?
TeeJay, I live near Willmar, MN and just planted some biologic hotspot (winter wheat, buckwheat, peas) about a month ago and it is coming up nice in a "mini-food plot" I made in an opening in the woods. I also just planted (a few days ago) some brassicas in another mini-plot and they are already coming up! The brassicas are supposed to last longer into the season as the deer aren't supposed to eat them until after it gets cold (they sweeten then) as I understand. Both of these endeavorswere pretty utilitarian. I basically raked away the leaves and debris, raked in the seed, and let it rain. Since I wasn't tilling the soil, I overseeded it a bit. Here is a pic of a young buck in the first one I planted - about two weeks after I planted it. I am experimenting on scattering these all over the woods. They seem to be visiting the first one regularly.

RE: Food Plot ?
Rye would be my top pick. I've heard lots of good things about Buck Forage Oats, but I have never shelled out the money for them.

Whitetail Institute has a new product out that looks like it might fit your needs. It's called Winter Greens.
I just planted 2 quarter acre plots of mossy oak clover plus--I'm very pleased. |
