food plot tools?
 

what would you guys recommend i use to get my food plots started? these plots will not be anything big just something around 1000 sqft. i currently own a 99 arctic cat 250 2wd quad with high and low gear. should i buy a disc for my quad or should i just buy a 5hp walk behind rototiller. the ground is sand/dirt with some rocks. thanks

[ul][*]The number one most important foodplot toolis a herbicide sprayer. Hand, backpack, or mounted, ya need to kill existing vegetation before you plant, and control weeds after. Seed, fertilizer, lime, can be spread by hand if neccessary on small plots.[*]Next is aspreader, push, tow, or mounted. This is for spreading fertilizer, large seed, and maybe lime. A small hand spreader is better for tiny seed like clovers and brassicas. Tiny seeds work best for no plow type plots.[*]Third is a disk harrow, pulled by a ATV, lawn mower, or tractor. You want the heaviest you can pull. This mixes lime, fertilzer, and dead vegetation into the soil. When set shallow, will also bury larger seed. [/ul]
You can use rototillers, cultipackers, seed drills, plows, and other equiptmentwhen you have them available ... but the aboveare the basics, in order of importance. And always try and have a soil test done so you only attempt to plant what will grow in your soil.

ok, i got a sprayer one of those small ones you carry its just a 4 gallon one you pump and spray i just used that last week with roundup in it. when i go back up in a week or so i was debating on getting a disc for my quad or a walk behind rototiller, which do you think would be better? also i i have a hand and push spreader

I have never had those small disks work They are not heavy enough. Contact your soil and water office or a PF group in your area and rent a real disk or something. To buy a piece that works correctly you will spend lots more than $150.

if you can locate one, a tiller is the best, i use mine and guys from out of town pay me to bush hog and use my tiller on their food plots.i don't use any spray, just bush hog and tiller, end results powder dirt.heres one thats around 14 days old
