Fall Attractor Plot

Do you guys have any suggestions for a plot to put on an old logging trail as a fall/winter attractor plot. It is in the woods so there is not direct sunlight. I was thinking oats/wheat/some sort of Brassica dwarf rape or turnips. Any suggestion or tips would be greatly appreciated. I live in Western Missouri just North of Kansas City.

Rye or wheat would be good. Plant it in the next few weeks and the deer will be in there all fall.

I highly doubt that any food plot would work if there is not some direct sunlight.

I have a spot that I have sprayed with Roundup 2 weeks ago in the middle of the woods, gets plenty of sun, limed last year. What would be a good hunting plot to plant here with in the next week.

Tons of possibilities. What do you want the spot to be? A harvest plot, or a destination plot?

4-6 hours of good sunlight is what should be aimed for as a minimum. 4-6 of so-so light can be workable.

Before suggesting what to plant, what are your soil sample results? As well, what method do you want to use? Are you planning on using hand implements?

I'm not sure of your weather there, so check suggested planting dates (check whitetail institute, or biologic, tecomate, etc.) for a better picture of how much time you have left. That'll be a big factor in what you can do at this point too.

Keep in mind that brassica's should be planted and in good germination state at least 30 days before your first frost. I like to hit the 40-45 day window if weather conditions allow.

Antler King offers "Honey Hole" with three varieties of rape, two turnips. Pretty tuff at this stage of the game to put in food plots. As Phade stated, brassica should be planted before the 30 days to your first frost.

LXOwn3r, it is true the nutrients and pH are the most important factors for a good food plot...destination or kill plot. However, rye and wheat will grow just about anywhere, are relatively cheap, and almost all wildlife love. In the spring the turkeyslike to strut in green areas as well.

In Missouri MDC will actually provide wheat, along with a variety ofgeneric food plot seed (milo, corn, annual lespedeza, buckwheat, etc.)for free when they have it available. Where north of KC are you. I live in KC and outfit north of St. Joseph (www.anyseasonoutdoors.com). If you are in Platte county you want to callthe KC office. The Private Lands Biologist is Chris Blunk. If you are in Buchannan, call the St. Joseph office. You want the Private Lands Biologist, Jeff Powelson...who is my hunting buddy and former boss. Call or email me anytime to chat hunting, management, and critters.
