How big/old does a fawn need to be to survive on its own?

ie. take its mom Sept. 27th will it survive?

ps. this is the one I am refering to.

A month from now, that fawn will be fine on its own, a little more vulnerable to predators and hunters, but will be able to feed on its own and survive, will more than likely join another doe family group for the fall/winter.

On a side note, I use those exact same mineral blocks in that picture, the deer love them and it supplies some beneficial minerals.

Does can be sexually mature at 6 months old. So I would assume if they are born in May or April and are 4-5 months old at the time of their mothers harvesting they are certainly capable of feeding themselves.

I've read that once they are weaned (~3 months?), they are capable of surviving on their own. My rule of thumb is "no spots" (in part, because the wife can handle it better, lol). From the look of the pic, I would guess that that fawn willhave no problem come 27 Sept. Note that some hold the belief that the (buck) fawn has a better chance of survival if the doe is taken - he is more likely to remain in his natal area rather than dispersing.

In the Northeast - all normal born (May/June) fawns can fend for themselves by late September. I would not worry too much about it - in most areas - its helpful to take some does early - before breeding.
