I need a food source to plant in September?

I purchased 25 acres this year and am looking for something to plant as a border strip for the beans in the field. High ground so moisture is a concern. Slightly dry ground but not bad. Edge I want to plant gets a half day of sun. It will be perfect if I can plant the right crop and get the does to hang out and help the nutrition as well.

You'll get lost of thoughts on this topic.

I'd say not CLOVER
not Alfalfa

I'd go with a cereal Grain like Rye or Winter Wheat. BFO can be good -but 1st good freeze ends the plot. Same with sunflowers and turnips.

I'd go with a Winter Hardy annual planting like winter wheat or rye in Year 1.

rye grain or winter wheat. they're both about the same as far as growing, cost, yield, etc. the rye is allelopathic so you'll get some benefit from that. forget about sunflowers in september, that's the time they should be harvested.

If you want an annual that attracts and provides good nutritional forage you simply cannot beat brassicas.

Since I have no experience with cereal grains, Brassicas get my vote!
