RE: mineral licks gettin torn up!! (recipe)
MO Hoyt,
I purchased my trace minerals and loose salt but I'm having a hard time finding the dicalcium carbonate. I think I will try using calcium carbonate instead. It is readily available at my local feed store. This is the same ingredient in the Buck Bran or Buck Grub.

does it matter if it is out in the open, or if it is in the woods? Does the hot sun harden it at all? Also, do you just pile it up in a mound, or spread it out table size, a few inches thick? And,how does a rain affect it? Have never used a lick, but these posts have got my interest up.

You NYer's best be quiet when using them. Despite the fact they sell commerical ones at Gander, BP, etc...they are still illegal.
It really wasn't a big deal pre-CWD, but ECO's are tough on this now. I had a direct chat with a Regional Head, and a central biologist this summer on salt/mineral licks. You know the saying "Sh!t flows downhill"....let's just say the ECO's have their directives. Don't get busted, you will get a ticket.
DEC site:
It is unlawful to:
[ul][*]Make, set or use a salt lick on land inhabited by deer or bear[/ul]

I checked my 2 spots this past weekend and they have pretty much dug the stump up that I mixed in the trace mineral salt back in Feb.
I just got 1 bag of di cal and am waiting on the second to come in, I will use the recipe the end of winter.

Hey all I'm new here, but I got interested in this thread. I am going to try the recipe today. I know it's late, but better late than never. I am going to place it in the edge of a creek that on the south side has a swamp, but good cover. It's so damn hot, I'm not looking forward to digging the 4'x6'x1' pit, but it's worth it.

i just started using the antler king mineral mix on the edge of one of my fields, a 20 lb bag only costs 15.00, i have never seen deer go through so much mineral and tear the ground up so fast. im sticking with antler king.
