seeded my small plot today
 

finally got a small plot done. started clearing (it was a tangle of tree tops). it is only about .1 ac. spread the lime, fert, & seed today after spending the past couple raking/hauling debris. started by cutting the tops & splitting the wood (~7 face cord). here is a before pic and todays pic. i will try and post more pics as it grows.

Looks promising - and alot of work. The plot looks open now -how much shade do youget here in the summer?

What are the flags for?

I Like the mature hemlocks in the distance - it must look neat here with snow on the ground.

it is quite open (most open in the entire woods). I put the clover on heavy (way too heavy - 4# ladino, 2# of red), but I want it thick. thought about some chicory, but said the heck with it.

actually the hemlocks are on a steep (real steep - 40' straight down) bank that goes down to a seasonal stream. flags are some trees I had planted last year. I am thinking of planting a cluster of sawtooth oaks on part of plot ("upper" left corner).

next project is to get ~1 ac. cleared at my camp. need to get my dad "on board" (the concept & $$). I think it will be somewhat less work (at least hand work), especially for the size (.1 ac. vs 1 ac.). need to cut a lot of pole sized trees (take in for firewood), then get a dozer to pop & stack the stumps and grade area/expose the soil. then just lime/fert/seed.
