Sunflowers for attracting Doves

I'm looking to plant some sunflowers soon any tips on how to proceed? Is their one type that's better than others, do they have to be planted in a single row or can they be broadcast spread. I'm in the Great lakes area how soon do I have to plant to be ready by September 1. Any other tips would be helpful. Thanks

Every year we plant probably 100 acres or more for our selves and our landowners for dove hunting, we plant with a 16 row planter sometime after the 15th of May, They are not RR , so we have to cultivate them to keep the weeds down.. Also, we aalways plant near a power line for roosting purposes... I am going to broadcast some in the grden and disk them in lightly, cant get the planter in here....
