RE: SALT BLOCK QUESTION

My theory on salt blocks is that deer will use them but not go crazy over them like they would a ripe soybean field or pile of sweet corn. I doubt deer head out of their way to find them. Or spend a lot of time around them. I'd use them as a supplement to the deer's diet and place them along trails you think they use. As for putting them on public land, if its well hunted, it will definitely be a tip off to other hunters you might have a good spot. Just my 2 cents.

Use a trace mineral block, they won't show as bright in the woods...

RE: SALT BLOCK QUESTION

Most deer will LONG forget about the "salt lick" (especially bucks)come October and November. You need to ask yourself why you wanta block near your stand.

I like a good salt lick in the area of my stand - but not next to it. I position a Trail Camera over it - and have a really good idea of the bucks - and other deer - coming and going from the area - from June - into hunting season. However - if I didn't use it with a camera - I can't think of a good reason to keep using salt. The deer just don't even care about salt or minerals after September - at least thats been my experience.

I agree with FH. They will start using the licks in April and use it heavy in July & Aug. and then almost stop using it by Sept. Basically they use it during the antler growing season.

Always use a mineral block or formula that contains 30% or less salt.

Make sure it's legal to do that in your state

RE: SALT BLOCK QUESTION

I've been using trace mineral salt block recently and they seem to use them most in the spring through fall. But it would be a good idea to keep them out all year round. Even though they may not use them as much at certain times they still use them and can rely on them being in that spot. I have been using them lately and the deer love them. I started with the regular salt block and they loved it and then started using the trace blocks and they love them just as much. I have even buried them in the winter during prime time and they have literally dug them up to get to it. Even though it does not have the vitamins and nutrients other blocks have it is a Great way to keep them in areas you hunt and very inexpensive compared to other blocks while including minerals such as calcium for growing deer.
