Aerator
 

We lost our no till drill and had a thought for planting one of our fields that we cannot plow. What do you think of using our aerator, such as to run over the field once or twice. This is after I bush hogged what little there is into the ground months earlier. Then I was going to slightly over seed with a spreader and follow with another pass of the aerator. Will this work?

Virginia has alot of deer and turkey in areas.
the soil there is mostly red dirt except for some sandy soil.
were are you at in VA?
can you atleast borow a disk or maybe pay a local farmer to disk it up for ya. maybe they will even drill it for ya
alot of great stuff will grow in most parts of VA

I would think that an aerator would put large, deep holes in the ground. And, when you plant the seeds you will be covering them too deep. Remember not to cover most seeds deeper than 1/2 inch. Check with your local FSA office; they may have some equipment you can loan.

As mentioned....It really depends upon the soil...and what you are planting...With grasses, it will work..just like planting your lawn...with clover..no need...just cut area close, and plant...with soybeans, disk, broadcast beans and disk lightly again....

PS....If you can supply more details I should be able to help further...I used to cover VA for John Deere...so I know a little about the area and farming...

Thanks for all the input, we were able to rent some smaller equipment from rentalworks....a dingo and DR.

The areator idea will work, that is how I have been overseeding lawns for years, Go over it 3 or 4 times then sow the seed then go over it again a couple times, you might have to put some weight on it to get enough depth, give it a try....
