I really agree with you guys about trying something different in this area, but if this guy is looking to see deer, and he is asking this late in the year, then I would still stick with wheat. By the way, I really appreciate all the info you all give on this site.

BSK, we feel that you are for the most point correct about the highly acidic soils. However we are finding that with the more shallow rooted plants like some of the ladinos that the liquid lime will do fine in the clat soils as these plants rarely root more than a few inches. Soil penetration of the lime to a depth of 4-8 inches is the most important...
Elsewise I think that we are all in sync (not to be confused with my daughters favorite singing group, bathroom sink) that the animals will move to the plant that will satisfy the missing nutrient in their system at any given time. There is no magic bean... The forages are good as the meat and potatoes of the food plots, but not the only end.

BSK... We tend to promote the organic fertilizers when possible. We see a potential for legal problems with the "Green" folks in the near future because of runoff. Their always looking. Our contact with the liquid lime and some folks we know say the liquid stuff works well in the clay type situations and is less hassle when applying by hand, as it can be sprayed. Ag lime can never be bad...

lunchbucket; you just made one of those "never" statements. The locals in my area are fighting a new quarry proposal. One of the potential problems is limestone dust. It has the potential to dessicate plants in dry areas. It may upset the ecosystem in the acid swamp next to the quarry. If you use ag lime at recommended rates and apply it properly there should be no problem. But even with ag lime you could have a chemical spill in an area that can't handle it.

Be careful; you can't make things fool proof. Fools are too resouceful.
