100 Acres in Sidney Ctr NY needs help
 

I bought property in Sidney Center that has been quarried. The persont took the large stones but left thesmaller ones. What will grow onrocky terrain?Does anyone have any sugesstions of what I could plant that would thrive in this type of soil with a lot of direct sunlight? Any particular type of trees?

What type of quarry was it? Is there any top soil left and what type of soil do you have? These are all important questions. The back of my property was an old limestone quarry and large areas are still straight rock.

The stones that were quarried were blue stone. One quarry is about 3 acres and has been graded. I assume they used what ever was there. It seems to be very hard soil.

check with the local Soil & Water District and Cornell Co-op. Also, the previous owner should of had a mining permit (if it was largeenough) through DEC,that would have had a reclamation plan.

Sounds very tough - maybe "blue shale" quarry - as we would call it.

If the soil is very thin or non-existent - you can't do much with a food plot. Sometimes you can plant pines for cover. I've seen Scotch Pine grow well in places like this.
