buck wheat?

i planted buck wheat 1 because it was cheap 2 for a cover crop.will a frost kill it ? the deer have been mowing it down,so i guess i'm hoping it will come up next year.if not i plan on planting alot more earlier next year and maybe bow hunt over it.

I tried buckwheat this year and its gone already, about the time it got the white bloom on it the deer ate it to the ground..I dont think I'll try it again.I have clover fields and I mow them several times a year so you can't put buckwheat in them, you cut it and it's done...

I checked my log book I planted 2 lb of buckwheat on the edge of a field the 5th of may and by the middle of august it was gone. The deer seem to like it .A fellow might try to plant it later in the year to last till bow season. Also it seems like when they eat it ,it doesn't grow back like clover and alfalfa.

How early would one need to plant it to ensure it's ready to eat on October 1st or so?

Range, i think i planted mine in early sept. before the frost the other day it was up about 4 to 5 inches, but was being mowed down fast by the deer, thats kinda what i wanted so they would stay away from this mix i put down at the same time.

Buckwheat is usually planted in the spring and rye in the fall... Not real nutritious but will draw if there is little else to eat and good soil/humus builders.
