December Standing Corn
Now that the snows have come to stay - NOTHING beats corn. (though soybeans still left are about as in demand!)
The deer are already coming out of the woodwork. If nothing else - after this coming weekend close of Shotgun Season - the black powder hunt of 12/17 should be spectacular. ![]() |
RE: December Standing Corn
Cool picture, it must be from your tree stand. I couldnt agree more, corn and soybeans are the best this time of year. When it gets cold they are there. Twoevenings ago I had 42 turkeys 9 does and 1 beautiful 8 point in my corn, it was great. I am glad that I planted alot because the turkeys eat too much. My corn turned out outstanding this year.

RE: December Standing Corn
I will come take care of anyones turkey problems:D:D:):)
FH - I was down in caz last week and there was about 4" of the white stuff, get any more last night and today? My house has recieved over 2.5feet of it in the last week and a half....too bad Northern Tier ended! |
RE: December Standing Corn
MLO - it is from a treestand on the West Side. We also have one on the South and 1 on the North.
Its nice to have options with the wind. We scout and film from the stands year round. MD - Yeah - about 8-10" on the ground now. Some places are over a foot - but not like you guys up north. Still - It seems the snow is here for good now. My digital camera DIED - so I'm borrowing one thats not as good. I'll try to post some better corn pics from my stand this weekend. - Maybe with my deer - who knows. FH |
RE: December Standing Corn
You always do a great job Farmhunter. That line of corn in the low area looks like a natural for deer movement across the field.

RE: December Standing Corn
Nice to hear from you Dan. The Line of corn was to Screen the 2 acre corner, but its helped to give the deer a pathway across the field, Coyotes too - we've seen them cut through several times now.
Dan - My young plums, apples, Grapes and Pears survived their 1st Summer - and a hot dry one at that. Thanks for your advice on such matters. FH |
RE: December Standing Corn
And I forgot, the Crop's are looking good for the winter, It will be interesting to see how long it will take for the critters to mow 'em down!
How has your harvest been this year anyway?? (deer) Ill be down there saturday for sure, possibly tomorrow if i play my cards right, last 3 times down there, I've seen a total of 10 deer, totally unlike Cazenovia!!! I figure they're getting smart:eek: Good luck this weekend and with the smokepole/bow next week! And If i may ask, where exactly are you in Cazenovia? I've always wondered this... |
RE: December Standing Corn
MD- They're not getting smart - they just aren't there like they were.
Give it an honest 2-3 years and they'll be back. We need a couple mild winters thats what we need I hear a 70+ year old Nelson gentleman took a 150ish buck this year. Last I heard - he was goin to tack up the antlers - and some folks were trying to persuade him that it should be mounted. Dressed weight 246lbs! Thats a good buck for anywhere!! - in a Bad year to be sure. We've taken 3 smallish bucks, thats it so far - but passed several small ones - the best 2 weekends are yet to come! No doe permits here in 7M. Maybe a couple does will be taken in the BP season - Depends on whats seen/taken this weekend - several of us still have Buck Tags. PS - I'm not in Caz - I work there - The lake in the picture is Hatch Lake - thats where I hunt. You can see the lake in the fist pic too - behind the corn. This pic is from my property: ![]() FH |
RE: December Standing Corn
Farm Hunter; I saw an interesting product at a tree nursery tour that I went on in the fall. They're selling 2' diameter biodegradable paper collars for trees for about $1 each. I've seen the mat products before but they were too expensive. These should be very cost effective for more valuable trees like apples, etc. They're supposed to last 3-5 years and are textured to drain the rain back towards the tree while lowering evaporation and eliminating the need to spray.

RE: December Standing Corn
Oh alright, and that Nelson buck doesnt surprise me, we took a 135" 11 point this year, and there were two bigger ones in the area we knew about...
Today took a better scenario, had deer around me as soon as i entered the woods and took 3 does (nuisance permits), saw a total of 11-12 deer in the 4 hours i was down there...still lookin hard for some antler...good luck next week! |
