how much round up
The directions that come with the bulk round up left me confused with how much round up to water should be used. Does anyone know a generall formula? I buy the 2.5 gallon jug at TSC.

RE: how much round up
Here's what I do - \
The directions call for 20 oz per acre. It doesn't really matter if you mix that 20 oz with 20 gallons, 30 gallons, or 40gallons of waterand apply it one on 1 acre. My sprayer puts out about 20 gallons of water per acre when I'm in 2nd gear. So I mix 20 oz with 20 gallons water - for one acre. If I'm spraying 3 acres - then 60 gallons water and 60 oz of 41% GLYPHOSATE. In other words - the mixture isn't as important as knowing how much your sprayer puts out per acre. FH |
RE: how much round up
OR two ounces to the gallon to kill grass 3-4 will kill most trees and well kudzo half and half

RE: how much round up
FH nailed the answer.
i have a 15 gallon electric spray tank. it's attached to a 10.000 footboom with 6 nozzles that are calibrated for the output of the pump. it puts out 1.0 gallon per minute (it'll spray for 15.000 minutes). the spray swath is 11.000 feet. i did the math. driving at 3.0000 mph for 15.000 minutes will cover 1.0000 acres. i know i'm exaggerating the figures with the zero's. but when i did my initial calculations, it worked out to exactly 43560 square feet covered by driving 3 mph with the 11 foot swath of the boom. \ |
RE: how much round up
The amount of concentrate you mix DOES matter! There is a huge % solution difference in 20 oz. glyphosateper 20, 30, or 40 gallons. Do the math! 20 oz divided by 20 gallons(2560 oz.)= .78% solution, 20 oz. divided by 30 gallons(3840 oz.)= .52 % solution and so on. The more water you use the less % of glyphosate you will have. According to the instructions most plants require a 1.5 % solution to effectively kill them.Or, about 60 oz. per 30 gallons= 1.56% solution. Do you guys get good kills using .78% solution 20 oz. per 20 gallons??? If so I need to cut way back!

RE: how much round up
if you put too much water in your tank, but still apply the recommended amount of gly per acre, you'll have too much water and the solution will run off the leaves/blades.
Imagine spraying 500 gallons of water and 1 qt of gly on an acre. it would be so much that most of the gly would wind up on the soil. Imagine spraying 1 quart of water and 1 qt of gly on an acre. the coverage and application would be so difficult that most of it would be wasted. I think 15 gallons per acre is about the right amount. |

Mixedin 20 gallons works well for me - but most of my spraying is done on plants 6" or less when applying to Roundup Corn/Soybeans - I've had some larger plants not die back 100%. FH |
RE: how much round up
Go to Monsantos website and look at the label...there is no such thing as a general use rate and there is a different amount of carrier to use (water) per acre depending on the species you are going after.
It makes a HUGE difference on performance depending on the target. Dont believe this garbage that it makes no difference...and 20 ounces may be the rate for some uses but certainly not all uses. Chemical companies spend a bloody fortune to build the data to support the lable...dont fall for the poster experts who over generalize. |
RE: how much round up
When we get recommendations from our crop consultant to spray soybeans/corn with round-up - or any glyphosate - it is usually a 5 gallon/acre water rate using one quart of roundup and some surfactant.
Example fill for our sprayer - 1000 gal cap. is as such: 10 gallons Surfate (Surfactant sold by Agsco Inc.), 50 gallons glyphosate - 5 gallons per acre - 200 acres on one fill = 200 quarts/4quarts/gallon = 50 gallons Sometimes we use 10 gallon nozzles but the rate stays the same - just fewer acres covered/fill. I apologize if my math is incorrect in any way - the rates are correct tho. |

You are correct - we shouldn't over generalize - and it makes a big difference if you are trying to kill off 3 ft Ragweed or 4" foxtail. Sorry if I offended - "general Question - general anwser" - Follow?? FH |
RE: how much round up
I have used 80 oz to 25 gallon and sprayed with my fimco sprayer wide open and travel 6 mph. Most of the grass I spray is about 2 foot tall. I believe I read on the label 20 oz to acre but believe on first time plots where you have nothing but weeds then over kill is what I shoot for. After my plot has been established I have cut my rate back. just my 2 cents and seems to work for me.
volume 0.5% 1% 1.5% 2 % 1 gal 0.7oz 1.3 oz 2oz2.7oz 25 gal 1 pt 1 qt 1.5qt 2 qt on difficult to control weeds it is recommend a 2 % solution sprayed so it would be 64 ozs in 25 gallons for a 2 % solution. now I am gonna make it more confusing. after reading furtherthe recommendations for control of weeds the label reads, apply 2-3 quarts mixed in 10-20 gallons per acre.this is whereI got my rates from.On my last batch of round up I mixed 100 ozs which would be approximately a 1.5% solution in my 25 gallon tank. I spray using my fimco sprayer full open at7 mph on the speedometer and got approximately 2 acres sprayed. I got excellent results from this. hope this helpssomeone out. |
RE: how much round up
No wonder you got excellent results. 100 oz divided by 3200 oz (25 gal.)= 3.125% solution! Should have killed EVERYTHING!
|
RE: how much round up
oddly enough, some areas the kill was great and in some areas it didn't look like I had sprayed at all with only minor wilting after 1 week of 100 degree temps.
I used 25 gallons on 2 1/4 acres. b/c I want to apply 12 gallons an acre, to make a 2% solution I must add 64 oz.(2 qt). If I double the gallons then I must double the concentration right, making 25 gallons with 128 oz (4 qt) of glyphosphate to keep the2 % solution. I ain't no math genious but thats where I came up with the 2%. I guess I am confused. |
RE: how much round up
The Teejet website has a handy spray calculator.
http://www.teejet.com/MS/TeeJet/support2.asp?ID=75 But if you calculate for application rate, you first need to know 1. Your flow rate per nozzle in gallons per minute. 2. speed of your sprayer miles per hour. 3. nozzle spacing on boom (20 inches is standard for foodplot type sprayers) 1. You simply measure what comes out of one nozzle for one minute. I fulled the tank with water, turned it on, and used one of my wifes 2 qt. tupperware measureing containers. I measured 20 oz/min, then checked each nozzle to make sure they were the same. 2. To check speed, you measure off 100ft, and time yourself in several gears, and a fixed RPM, if you can. I did this on my riding lawnmower too, was not hard. Recalculate for MPH miles per hour. Teejets website also has a page with conversions. 3. Most small boom type sprayers are designed for 20" spacing between nozzles, this depends on the nozzle type and pressure at which it is used. Height is adjusted to be about 20" above the tops of what you are sprayingto get good coverage. Useing the above formula, and my sprayer, in second gear I can very accurately spray precise mixtures ... such as Ed Spins(sp) 1/2 pint glyphosate per acre in clover to kill grasses. My 5 nozzle boom, 35 gal sprayer, sprays 20oz per minute (0.1563 gal/min), with 20 in spacing, in second gear traveling at 2.27 miles per hour .... will spray 20.42 gallons per acre. I mix 1/2 pint 41% glyphosate to 20.4 gals water to kill grass in clover .... 1 qt. glyphoste per 20.4 gal water for average total burn down ..... or up to 2 qt per20.4 galfor large tough weeds. If you are using a hand sprayer, 2.5 oz per gal of 41% glyphosate. I have know idea how tomeasure spray rate/coverage with"boomless type" spraynozzle setups. |
RE: how much round up
Not offended....just after 30 years in the weed business, it sometimes pains me greatly when people who buy herbicides do not bother to read a lable then invariably in out internet world post things on how the product didn't work.....didnt mean to come off testy.
