advice on planting for fall atracting
I have a feild that did not get planted this spring with corn or soybeens. So I thought I would take advantage of the situation and plant something to help hold deer. I already have a clover plot about 500 yds away. I am looking for options on what to plant to help atract deer this fall and early winter. This can be an anuall because if we have a normal springnext year this feildwill be rotated back into grain productionagain. Thanks for the help.

Try a blend of winter Austrain peas and winter wheat, likeat

$15/bag seeds 2/3 acre.
The peas will come up early and then the wheat will attact deer later in the season.

If you are in the north - its tough to beat Cereal Rye or Buck Forage Oats.for fall atractant. Don't plant too early (Labor Day in NY state) - the crop can be fertilized andturned under as green fertilizer early next spring.
This is Rye from 10/9/04 - 4 weeks after planting (central NY):
If its planted too early - it will get too tall - and less tasty. You want it to get about 6-8" tall and then go dormant. I like Rye because its roots go very deep and pull up nutrients from the subsoil. Also - its wnter hardy and stays green all winter under the snow.
