Rust on Soybeans?
 

Hey Ron -

What do you know about rust on Soybeans? We planted 4 locations w/soybeans - and one of them has some plants with a copper colored wholeleaves in places. It looks like a rust, and its not on all plants. We planted 2 different varieties of beans, so maybe one is more apt? Its been very Hot and Dry, not really good Soybean weather - so maybe that's a factor too.

Mostly I'm curious if its common, it seems most of the plants of fine.

Sean there is no Rust in the U.S. yet, all that has been a scare by the Chemical companies to sell their product, it is still only in South America, if a wind storm brings it up we will start spraying when it hits N. Carolina. Rust is going to be a tiny white grain of salt like on the leaf that will increse in size as is mastitizes, If you said you had wet weather it could be pithium, it could could be magnesium deficiency or it could be caused by spider mites, does the leaf have tiny holes in it. Try spraying it with a mix of 10 lbs of Epsom salts and 20 gallons of water to the acre, see what happens. If you have ever had 2=4=D in your sprayer dont use it for anything but the weed killer. You can never get 2-4-D out of the sprayer in it's lifetime... Use another sprayer.... Keep me posted ... the color is not synonomous with the fungus Rust.. Hope this helps a little

Pithium starts at the root and works up to the leaf, are your beans in blossom yet, we have some that are.....

I just read on that alseed.com that rust is spotted in Fla and as far N as Georgia, I will check this out tomorrow with a chemical rep we use and try to get the latest scoop.. If it reaches the Carolina's we spray.... We've got some chemical on hand just to be ready...

FarnHunter I checked on Sat and rust is in Florida, and it is being watched closely by our chem. reps.... When we get ready to do something I will get back to you pronto, for food plots you might not need a treatment, will check that too....

I forgot to get a close-up - but I will.

Seems like after the last couple big rains - the plot is growing more green than it was - I hope its not a rust, I tend to think it has more to do with .5" of rain in May and not much more in June.

You'll notice - its on the older leaves - the newer leaves after the last couple rains are much more normal looking.

Here is how the plot looks from a distance - mostly green - so I'm not too concerned - just curious.

I talked to the County Agent today, rust is in Fla and Alabama. , nothing spotted any farther North than that.... Did you spray with epsom salts, or Manganese, try Epsom salts 10lbs to 20 gal water to the acre.... Also Sean if a hurricane comes up the East coast before labor day then Rust might be a concern, if it happens after labor day I understand nothing to worry about as the maturity is pretty welll established... I will keep you posted,, It vlooks like a Magnesium deficiency to me Spray with the salts, try a plot and see what effect it has......

Thanks Ron - I wondered if it might be a trace element deficiency - I'll look into it a little more.

I understand rust is a tropical disease and is not expected to go to far North in the U.S. Not an expert myself but was told that by someone who seemed to know what he was talking about. He also said that deer will always be a bigger problem on "soybean foodplots" than rust.
