what type of mineral lick to use for best results?
Hi I'm new to HuntingNet and as I was reading up on minerals and attractants and I'm lookign for something that can not only attract deer year round with but also give them beneficaial minerals and nutrients, esp. now when the antler and fawn cycles are beginning. Right nowI just have a salt block and product called Buck Jam, that claims to be an instant mineral lick, but the deer don't seem to be using it. It's an ideal location at an intersection of two heavily traveled trails. Any advice or ideas on what would be more successful would be greatly appreciated
Thanks, G Lew, KOTW |

Use the trace salt mineral lick (brown salt block) it has more nutrients than the white one. Deer are a little hesitant at first but they will come to it, and will mainly eat the dirt instead of licking the actual block.

The following recipe works great and the deer will dig holes in the ground for it:
50lbs stock salt 50lbs Di-Cal ( dicalcium Phosphate) 100lbs Red Unmedicated trace mineral salt. Dig a 3x3x3 hole and mix all 200 pounds with the dirt. 1st year put it in every 6 months and then yearly after that. This is the basic of what all name brand minerals are made of for about $25.00. |
