Food Plots

I Deer hunt in East St. Tammany Parish, Talisheek, Louisiana in Area 1. The woods are slightly hilly. Mixture of some hardwoods but mostly Pine. Food plots are on high ground Piney areas. Range in size 1/3 acre to 1/2 acre. I need suggestions on what to plant? On soil preparation? Have tried Imperial Clover, Rackmaster, mixing rye and peas. Have gotten Average results. We throw corn with automated feeders 2x per day 6:45am and 4:00 pm. Any information you can give is important because we are bushogging and discing now. We want to be finished planting by September 30th. Next year we will be going to 2 plantings Fall and Spring. I would Appreciate any advice!

RE: Food Plots

Sounds similar to the areas we hunt in Alabama. We plant a lot of food plots (about 60) and have good results with a mixture of rye, wheat and oats that we broadcast mixed with fertilizer. Try to plant before the end of Sept. Do a soil sample prior to planting and apply lime as needed. It won't help much this winter, but will pay off later. Next spring is harder to suggest. Soybeans and iron clay peas will probably be eat up before they have time to get established.
