I have the same gun and don't slap in a rifled choke I just shoot mod. in it and it is fine. All depends on how well it groups smooth barrels seem vary from gun to gun quite a bit.

Sure you can. I hunted with my 870 that way for the first couple of years. The longer barrel is a bit unwieldy and the bead sight (I'm assuming that is what you have) is not the best thing if you're expecting to take a shot of more than 30 yards or so, but yeah, you can do it. I do recommend that you use the rifled choke and shoot a sabot. Its a lot more accurate than a foster and with nothing but the bead sight you probably need it. I spent the $115 or so on a shorter rifled barrel with open sights several years ago and I've been delighted with the results, so I'd encourage you to go that route if you enjoy slugging.
Good luck!

The general consensus is that rifled choke tubes are not very effective in creating enought spin for the sabot slugs. Use a modified, improved or cylinder choke and try a couple of different brands of rifled slugs and see which shoots best through your gun. Without a sighting system, 40-50 yards is probably your limit on range. If you have a vent ribbed barrel, you could add some rifle sights easily to gain some accuracy and adjustment.
I currently shoot a Rem870 with a 28" modified barrel. I have it topped off with a scope on a B-square mount now.
