.270WSM..140gr or 150gr for whitetails???
 

I'm just wondering what's your opinion on those 2 different weights of bullets for whitetails. Obviously the 140gr will have better ballistics speed wise, but what's my best all around round? I was thinking about shooting ballistic silver tips. What are your thoughts on that bullet type too(I suppose while we are at it :D)?

Either grain is fine, I like the 140's. I prefer the bonded bullet, you couldn't give me a box of ballistic tips.

I've shot the Ballistic SilverTips out of my .30-06 forever and my .300WSM for the last 4 years and absolutely love 'em. I've shot deer as close as 20 yds and as far away as 367 yds and the results are always the same ---- dead deer, down now. I'd shoot the 140 gr out of your .270WSM for deer, if you hunt anything bigger, I'd go with the heavier load.:)

150 gr. but not much different .only use ballistic tips for open areas only,i'm not crazy about them.

Get some 140's in the BT. I dont care what anyone says about them they have never failed me and always bring home the venison. the bt's they make now r premium bullets and perform flawlessly. I would highly recomend BT's!

The .270 is one of the original speed merchants, I never could understand why anybody'd want to slow 'em down to .30-06 performance by using bullets heavier than the game required. The 130s are legendary deer killers, the 150s are supposedly for deep penetration, and the 140s are just a compromise. Back when it was the new kid on the block, one bullet company actually made 120s which acted like bombs on whitetail and desert mulies. [8D]

While I have not yet moved from a .270 to the new WSM .270. I think mine shoots a .130 BT very well and I have takens lots of Deer and hogs with that one. I suppose you could go heavier, but why? I prefer the improved trajectories of the lighter grained bullets.:D

You really need to try balistic tips at the range and see if your gun even likes them.
The coating on them, ( moly) or (lubabond) makes some guns not like them very well. my gun could not group with balitic tips at all. As suggested earlier I too would go for the 130 gr. bullets for whitail deer, in Federal or Hornady factory ammo. I'm not crazy about balistic tips.

Zrexpilot...isn't it true moly coated bullets are tough on a barell or will even ruin it? Or am I mistaken?

Stump the Win SBT's are lubalox coating, it is not moly. When using moly they will or can cause problems if you do not remove the copper fouling prior, as when you shoot moly it will coat the bore. I think most people run into problems by not removing the underlying copper before using moly coated bullets. I personally haven't used many moly bullets nor do I really see the need. In regards to the lubalox I have found most rifles don't seem to have a problem in terms of acceptable accuracy. I also see no real point of it either and have always just preferred Nosler BT's vs the CT version produced for Winchester. Federal Premium load the Nosler BT's that use no such coating.

As far as the choice for Ballistic Tips, I can't say a bad thing about them having used them in 130 gr (.277) thru 180 gr (.308) they have always worked awesome on Antelope and both Mule/WT deer. If you anticipate close shots or prefer to aim for bone but still want a bullet that performs closely to the BT's you may want to consider the Nosler Accubond. I found this bullet to be excellent in accuracy, retention and performance on larger game. Although I still load the NBT's for my deer hunting needs b/c it has worked and see no reason to switch, no doubt the bonded polymers will also work for those who prefer a bit more controlled expansion for their particular deer hunting needs.

What grain depends on your rifle 130-150gr will all work for deer out of the 270, so pick the best performer for your application. The only way to tell is buy some and head to the range shooting at distances you expect to in the field. I have found in factory ammo Federal Premium and Hornady Custom Ammo provided the best results in terms of accuracy.
