I think ethics should be taught in hunter safety courses. Even though the question of shooting 100 pheasents and letting them lay was an easy answer, there are still people out there who do these kinds of things and the few that do make us all look bad.

IMO I think hunting ethic can't be taught in hunter education. You can mention what one thinks is right or wrong but hunting ethic are best when taught from Father to son/daughter.

Basic ethics should be taught in class. Like what??
Like not shooting 100 pheasants for fun and leave them lay.

Not to use a BB gun when hunting deer.

Not to drive around the city with 4 dead bloody deer on the hood of your car.

Not to leave a gutpile in the middle of the road.

These are basically simple ethics I think everyone can agree on, that will help to not give hunters a bad image from the general public. Most are common sense, but there are plenty of people out there that also lack that.

Wouldn't both these be covered under the Law?

Your right about the other things they should cover respect for game, others and land.

Yeah they would, but it's the idea that is trying to be preached here, not the actual example. Like, trying to recover game, and using the correct gun, in respect for the animal.

I agree we should be teaching basic ethics in class. An example would be to have respect for the animals. There's no law against dull broadheads but we all know that a sharp one will make a quick and humane kill. There is also ethics involved in obeying the game laws.

We also need to teach them the skills needed to address the more complex issues that they will face such as hunting over bait, with hounds, or even behind a high fence. You know, the one that create the lively debates. In the example kshuner gave concerning the fenced area I think the instructor was in error to inject his own personel opinion. He should have posed the question then offered the pros and cons then ask the students to decide.

One thing we need to remember is that there is a lot of kids that attend the classes that don't have dad, grand-dad or uncle to learn from. The instructors job is to teach them how to be safe hunters to get them started and to plant the seeds so that they can become ethical sportsmen as well.

I think ethics start in the home. If something was to be included in the Hunter Safety Course, i think it should be situational based and not an easy no-thought-required answer.

Teach the law, safety, identifying game, respect land owners and importance of the heritage of the sport.
I agree 100%. It's unethical to break the law.
