30-06 good catskill mountain gun?

i have a 742 woods master 4 shot semi-auto . Im wondering how would this gun be for hunting in the mountains, and if so whats a good bullet to use for some deer. I think im going to put a 3X9 weaver on it and will it be good for them mountain bucks?

Yes a .30-05 will kill deer in the Catskills as well as the Dacks if you ever go there. Use of a semi-automatic by someone who isn't exeprienced and deliberate is dangerous, deer don't necessarily fall down when you pull the trigger. I'd use on of the standard bullets like the Winchester Power Point or Remington Corelokt. I think the 3x9 is a bit oversized, the 742 is heavy enough, but it is your rifle, and the combination will work anywhere you go on the continent, excpet PA, they don't allow self loaders.

if you have questions about different types of ammunition you can go to
www.remington.com they have ballistics charts on all types of calibers, and grains. there are charts for velocity, range, fps,and lbs of energy on impact for different grains, and it can show you the different results in mushrooms.

Buckmastr229, I also hunt in the Catskills and I use a 30-06. I've never had a problem. I use a 3x9 scope also, but I have the see-thru mounts, which I think are a must for running deer. I use 165gr. Scirocco Bonded (I think that is how it is spelled) and they have never let me down. Where in the Catskills will you be hunting?

A 30-06 is a good gun for anywhere, so yes. And no need for premium bullets on deer either. The Remington corelokt or winchester powerpoint are both excellent. I like 150 gr for deer, but any weight bullet will do fine.

The old naught-six is one of the finest deer slayers ever made, from the Catskills to the Rockies and all places in between. I shoot the 168gr Winchester Ballistic Silvertip but I hunt a lot of big open fields. If I were hunting the woods full time, I'd probably switch to the 180gr Winchester PowerPoint or Failsafe.:)

I hunt those areas and use a 30-06 with 165 gr. Win. Fail Safe ammo. It will handle deer and bear .
