How far can you consistently hit a 6" circle? Plenty of gun, if you pick a good bullet and place the shot in the boiler room.

In our state they are not legal because they fall short of the required ME.

My oldest girl shoots a 30 with hopped up hand loads using soft points, FMJ is illegal in Oregon, she's killed deer out to 150 yds with a lung shot, excellent under 100yd.

If using factory soft points, usually in 110 gr, you'll be good out to about 100 yds.

I feel that no matter what bullet you choose, and no matter how hot you want to load it, the 30 caliber carbine is only marginally adequate...not really a good choice for deer. I carried one my very first year hunting, but it was my only choice and my dad and grandpa were with me at all times...I know they wouldn't have let me shoot at anything beyond 50 yards (never got a shot that first year though). A fun gun at the range....maybe even a fun small game gun for close shots and a lot of practice.
Of course it can kill deer, but it would be best suited for close shots on small deer.
I actually thought about buying a Ruger blackhawk in 30 carbine just to help my dad shoot up his massive store of surplus ammo.
