.243 is capable of killing deer just fine if you make sure to take good shots. The 270 really isn't that much easier on yer shoulder, so I'd opt for the .243. I killed my first deer with one, hit it in the neck/spine and dropped it right on spot. I really like the .243, you can shoot it all day without any problem, and plentiful ammo.

i love my 243 but after shooting 7 deer with it "all ran 20-75 yards" i decided to try my 270 i liked it a lot and took two does with it but it didn't preform any better or worse then the 243. in fact i took a shot on a very large doe that was quatering towards me and the shot entered the neck and came out in the far shoulder and she ran about 10 yards without leaving much blood. and i would have expected the 243 to perform just as well.
now i have killed about 14 deer with my 243 and i found the 100gr. core lokts work the best for me. i didn't like the way the 100 federal classic softpoints performed though. the bullets would always fragment when hitting the slightest bone.
hope you like your new toy!
