New Hunter Question

Hello,

I am new to hunting deer, and have been reading alot of articles, but wanted to post for more information. I will be hunting white tail this fall and recently purchased the Remington Express 870 Deer Gun (http://www.remington.com/firearms/shotguns/870expdr.htm) Its the 20" smoothbore 12 gauge. What would be th recommended shot for this gun when hunting deer? And effectively how far away can I be, what would the range be that would still allow for an ensured kill? I chose this gun mainly because of the price, it was only $326 brand new oppsed to a rifle, which is closer to $1000. Thanks in advance for any advice...

i use triple ought buck shot and it has been effective in stopping deer up to 50 yds for me but u may be anle to stop them at maybe 60yds with yours because your barrel is slightly longer. Good luck and read all you can.

rifled slugs can be used on almost any shotgun barrel it is the sabots you have to be careful with. Winchester sells them at your local wal-mart in boxes of 15.Good luck hunting

RE: New Hunter Question

Great! I had one more question about shot. The barrel on my new gun will take 2 3/4 as well as 3".... Does it matter what size shells I choose or is either fine for any condition? Thanks so much, this place has provided me with so much info the last few weeks!!!

3 inch shells have more pellets for longer distance shots and when deer are hidden in brush. I use 3 inch all the time they may have more kick but it is worth it.

RE: New Hunter Question

I use a combonation of slugs and buckshot. The first shot is a slug, second is buckshot, and third is slug. Usually it only take on shot, but if the shot is close and the deer runs you can take a shot with the buckshot.
