.22 for whitetail????

could u use a marlin 7000 for whitetail hunting?

i shoot stuff 01-23-2005 07:26 PM

RE: .22 for whitetail????

i would say no because it has barley no knockdown power and if u do hit it u will probably just wound it and wont find it and there goes a good deer. get somethin with knockdown power like a 12 gauge

It would not be legal in hardly any states that I know of.

BAD IDEA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Besides being not legal in any state that I know of .
A carterage with that little power is unethical .

can't understand why any legal hunter would want to use a 22. Almost all states that I have hunted in don't allow anything smaller than a 243.

James B 01-23-2005 08:28 PM

RE: .22 for whitetail????

Many states allow the 223 and up. a few states allow the 22 Magnum. Our state allows the 223 and 22-250 but not the Hornet and smaller. I know quite a few meat hunters who head shoot deer for the freezer with their 223 and 22-250 that they carry for coyotes.

After the I had post on this subject.
And the replies I will
Use at least a 30 cal or close to it.
A 22-250 may be ok but I just don't think I want to.
A 30 cal in 30-06 or
30-30 something close will be what I will be looking at.

The 25-06 is another good choice for deer and antelope. Some use it for elk as well although its a little light for that.

Ok I for one am getting sick of seeing this same type of thread over and over again. Whats the joy of shooting a deer with a small caliber, in my opinon is a stupid stunt. Sure if everything goes perfect you can kill a deer with a 22mag but why fiddle around with "what could go wrong?" Pick a yourself a larger caliber put the hairs behind the shoulder and squeeze. You shoot ahead you get shoulder=dead deer, shoot back=dead deer, high=dead deer, low well u miss. Why not use a caliber that leaves a little bit of room for error instead of chancing the shot to show off. If some of you folks plan on ever coming up to Canada to hunt ya better leave them pea shooters at home because i highly doubt a outfitter here is going to let you out of camp with a toy.

I'll second the 25-06. It is very flat shooting, low recoil, and handles 120 grain bullets very well. Nearly anybody can learn to shoot one well with a little practice.

As far as .22LR, I think using one is illegal everywhere (or should be). A .22LR is good for close range varmints and plinking. It doesn't have the power or penetration needed to hunt large game with.

Texas allows the use of any centerfire rifle cartridge. I know people that use .222's and .223's successfully. But these cartridges have limited range for deer-sized game and limited bullet selection in factory ammo.

RE: .22 for whitetail????

if economics is a concern--you might check out the savage brand of rifles as opposed to the 710 (I haven't heard very many good things about the 710) however, Savages are reasonable in price and outstanding in quality

it was a joke, but i do have a 22-250, that i'm sure is capable but not the best choice, plus its not legal here, smallest allowed is .24 cal, and the smallest i shoot is a 260 rem. i also own several 22's and one 22 mag. but i would never ever consider using either on deer.

RE: .22 for whitetail????

I wouldn't ever think of using it... bad idea. Even though, it could be just as deadly, if hit right, why try. Besides the fact it's probably illegal in your state.

I have a Savage 110 in .270 win caliber with a Simmons scope, its a very good gun for the money. I can shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards anytime. I dont know anything about the 710, but savage makes a very good gun for the money...

RE: .22 for whitetail????

The caliber that has killed the most White-tails is the 30-30. Walmart carries an awesome Marlin lever action. I shot a deer this year.using mine.I missed the vital shot because of bad positioning and the deer still fell over Instantly. The gun cost about 274.00. I put a scope on too. The accuracy is unbelievable. Our range is only 50 yards and I'm getting a pattern of a nickel.

Best gun I've ever own,
Chuck

could u use a marlin 7000 for whitetail hunting?

The answer is NO, NO, NO. Show the game you are hunting repect and use a caliber that will allow a clean and quick kill. Sure a .22 will kill a deer if your shot placement is perfect, and you maybe a expert marksmen, but deer move way to fast to take the chance of injuring the animal with less than a perfect shot.
