buck vs. buck

i seen two bucks this year that had antler wounds so bad the question of was the meat safe to eat asked. One of them a six pointer was killed by my inlaws it had three bad horn holes that were infected ,it had a gash in it's neck and the shoulder,he gave it to a guy in their club ,he ate the back straps and hams ,he said nothing was wrong with it. The other buck i killed, it had two small holes in the side that torn the intestines. It looked like the wounds were a few days old but wasn't infected yet but it sure was hard to gut. I just wonder how many bucks die from fighting wounds each year.

That is a great post, I did not see it before. As for the fights, I see wounds but not that many deer that I think were killed in battle. We also do not have preds that would really kill a wounded deer. We are starting to get more and more coyotes but just have not seen that many eaten deer.

I killed a buck this year with a couple of wounds on his face and neck but they were healed up pretty good. That is a good question but I would guess not to many deer die from battle wounds. Just a guess though.

i've never first hand seen a deer dead from antler wounds, but i've seen alot with scars and marks from antlers. The 9 pointer i got in iowa this year had broken off the tip on his right G-3, and the backs of his brows were chipped. his bases were rubbed flat from rubbing on trees. he had marks on his face from fighting and his jaw was broken and infected. he wouldnt have made it through the winter. so i guess theres one that would have been dead from fighting. you could see thta it was definetely an antler wound.
