When do deer head for water?

What time of the day will deer usually head for a drink? Morning, evening, midday? What are your experiences?

RE: When do deer head for water?

I've only hunted around water on a couple of occasions. Each time, the deer would belly up to the water hole in the morning after feeding during the night and then head to the bedding area. I took my first deer with a bow while set up between a water hole and bedding area in the early morning. Of course, things may be different in your area. I suggest you spend some time scouting any water holes in your hunting area to determine when they are drinking. Good Luck!!!!

Deer have to drink all day. They need lots of water. There was a thread not long ago that discussed this very topic, research it and you may get your answer!

From my duckhunting experiences , I'd have to say they drink when their thirsty<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I've seen them at all times of the day , including nice bucks , so if you have a good water hole with a funnel of heavy timber leading to it , hang your stand and pack a lunch.

Don't forget when they need to have a bath<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

Sorry, but the thirsty was over used.

To your question, like said they need water in there daily routine, but unlike humans they get most of it through greens and such. They will often be seen hitting water holes, lakes, etc to and from bedding to feeding areas. So hunting these spots usually consist of the same mentality as feeding areas. Like feeding areas the times they show up or when they show up depends on the deer, so don't be discouraged if they don't show up daily!

RE: When do deer head for water?

I have seen deer as well as other wildlife drink water from some of the oddest places. Tire ruts in the road, tree stumps after a rain, And I have even seen a deer drink out of a five gallon bucket that was on the edge of a wheat feild that had water in it after a rain. They will drink water when they need it and will get it from the easiest place they can while feeling safe. I have a old bath tub I use to water cattle in a pasture that has no pond and I see deer at it at all times. .
