RE: Black Deer
I saw 3 deer this year that were very dark in color but not black. The tops of thier backs were as dark as dark chocolate. Almost black but not quite! Just a real real dark brown. That pic of the black buck is one of the coolest things I've ever seen! I would love to run into one of them!

RE: Black Deer
I saw a black squirrel one time. I felt kind of sorry for it, it stood out clearly at 80 yards, you couldn't miss it as it went between the trees. I would think a black deer wouldn't live very long because it would also stand out.

RE: Black Deer
I saw a full body mount of a melanistic buck from PA in june but it was just a real dark brown. It was a lot darker than regular deer but it wasn't black like that other pic. That pic was pretty neat.

RE: Black Deer
A little tidbit...
"A color phase even more rare than white deer is black. No black deer were recorded in North America before 1929, and for reasons scientists have yet to figure out, 99 percent of the continent's few dozen black deer live in eight counties in Texas." |
RE: Black Deer
undefined I noticed the black deer in the picture has a white underside tail, curious to know if its belly was also white |
