I saw 3 deer this year that were very dark in color but not black. The tops of thier backs were as dark as dark chocolate. Almost black but not quite! Just a real real dark brown. That pic of the black buck is one of the coolest things I've ever seen! I would love to run into one of them!

I saw a black squirrel one time. I felt kind of sorry for it, it stood out clearly at 80 yards, you couldn't miss it as it went between the trees. I would think a black deer wouldn't live very long because it would also stand out.

I saw a full body mount of a melanistic buck from PA in june but it was just a real dark brown. It was a lot darker than regular deer but it wasn't black like that other pic. That pic was pretty neat.

A little tidbit...

"A color phase even more rare than white deer is black. No black deer were recorded in North America before 1929, and for reasons scientists have yet to figure out, 99 percent of the continent's few dozen black deer live in eight counties in Texas."

That is an awsome picture, I showed it to my dad,he is 82 now and although it has been over 40 years since he saw the black buck, he said the one he saw looked nearly identical to the picture.

I noticed the black deer in the picture has a white underside tail, curious to know if its belly was also white
